RIP Dobie
My big dufus of a dog is really sick, and my parents are having him put down tomorrow.
We got him on my 15th birthday. A labrador-German short-haired pointer cross. During our highly exuberant first meeting, he managed to slice my ear open with his tiny puppy teeth. There was blood everywhere - I still have a little scar.
We got Dobie after a really bad time with dogs. Our childhood dog Wiggles (we were kids, okay?) disappeared, believed bitten by a snake, but never to be seen again. 6 months after, we got Baldric, a sprightly springer spaniel, who was then hit by a car at 8 months old. His successor, Oberon, an adorable slobbery German short-haired pointer, was bitten by a snake at 9 months.
By the time we got Dobie, family friends were joking that a dog that moved into the Koelmeyers’ house was walking into a death sentence…
We really kept expecting to lose him. But he survived. Too clingy to wander far enough to find the road to be in any danger of cars. Too much of a wuss to seek out snakes. He has never been the brightest of dogs and he barks so loudly sometimes he hurts his own ears. But he’s always been a sweet, hilarious, wonderful pet.
Thanks for being a great friend, Dobie. I wish I could give you a pat goodbye.
